Immigration Speaker with 30+ yrs Experience on the Border
Harper Center, Ballroom
Thursday, February 10, 2011 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
Hear from someone who has known both the issues and the people for over 30 years:
"Welcoming the Stranger: Immigrant Hospitality at the Border and Creighton"
Ruben Garcia, founder and Executive Director of Annunciation House, El Paso/Juarez border
Feb. 10th, 7 p.m. Harper Center Ballroom
"As our mission of offering hospitality and sanctuary to peoples in migration—primarily the undocumented—has remained constant, the social and political context in which we have done so has continued to change over the years. In a contemporary U.S. climate that demonizes and marginalizes the immigrant, volunteers give witness to the cry for justice that springs forth from their lands through their willingness to offer hospitality to the undocumented."

Mr. Garcia has hosted Creighton Service Trips Students for many conversations about immigration -- about the Christian call to minister to those in need (which he answered by creating a shelter for undocumented immigrants in El Paso), about the myths of immigration, and by inviting young people to join him for a year of volunteering on the border.
Co-sponsored by many areas of Creighton University including School of Law, College of Business, Graff Chair of Catholic Theology, Campus Ministry, Cortina Community, Legado de Compasion, and the Creighton Center for Service and Justice.
