Virtual – Register in Bridge - https://learning.creighton.edu/learner/training/01a5fbd9/enroll
Facilitator: Erika L. Kirby, PhD, Communication Studies, College of Arts & Sciences, CFE Senior Faculty Associate & A.F. Jacobson Endowed Chair in Communication
In this session, we will explore (un)productive uses of language related to the social identities of our colleagues and students. An emphasis will be placed on gender and personal pronouns [What is transgender vs. cisgender vs. nonbinary? What are preferred pronouns? Why do we use them? How do they signal inclusion? Knowing that increasing numbers of students are identifying outside of sex assigned at birth, how can I have best practices in the classroom?] and disability [What is the difference between person-first and identity-first? How can we know when to use which to signal inclusion?] in addition to other language-based topics.
By the end of the program, participants will be able to:
• Articulate the importance of using (preferred) personal pronouns
• Explain the difference between person-first and identity-first language models of disability
